Points to note when working at low temperatures on aerial work platforms
Mar 03, 2023| In harsh low-temperature environments, the normal operation of aerial work platforms is undoubtedly challenged. Many aerial work platforms in these regions fail to function properly after winter sets in, primarily due to the following reasons:
- Improper hydraulic oil selection: Many people are unaware that different hydraulic oils are required for summer and winter. Using summer hydraulic oil in low temperatures can lead to various issues, including the possibility of freezing. It is essential to switch to winter hydraulic oil containing antifreeze, which is suitable for low-temperature operations.
- Thermal expansion and contraction of steel: In low temperatures, steel exhibits significant thermal expansion and contraction. Although the design of special equipment typically takes this property into account, extremely low temperatures can still cause instability, such as increased hardness and decreased toughness. This necessitates enhanced daily maintenance of the equipment and good lubrication of critical parts to prevent dry friction.
- Hydraulic system issues: In low temperatures, the hydraulic system may experience insufficient working pressure and other problems.
The following solutions can help address these issues:
- Check if the hydraulic oil type is correct. Summer hydraulic oil is highly viscous and unsuitable for low temperatures. Using summer oil in winter can lead to insufficient working pressure, preventing the lift from reaching its normal height and potentially damaging the equipment. Replace it with winter hydraulic oil , and empty the cylinder during the change.
- Check if the hydraulic oil has been used for a long time without replacement. Over time, the wear resistance of hydraulic oil decreases, leading to insufficient working pressure. Replace the old hydraulic oil with new oil.
- Check for oil leaks in the cylinder and lubrication between the support arms. Inspect the entire equipment for seal integrity and promptly repair any issues to maintain proper sealing.
- Check the hydraulic oil filter. Over time, the filter accumulates fine particles, increasing pressure in the hydraulic system and potentially causing insufficient power and overheating of the hydraulic pump and motor. Clean or replace the filter as needed.
By following these steps for inspection and maintenance, the normal operation of aerial work platforms in low-temperature environments can be effectively ensured.
