Scissor Lifts

What Is Scissor Lifts

A scissor lift is a mobile scaffold used to raise people and materials. The platform goes up and down using crisscrossed beams that move in a scissor-like way. Scissor lifts can help with any task that involves elevated workspaces, including sign hanging, ceiling work, light fixture installation, or maintenance tasks. They are also useful for outdoor projects such as bricklaying, tree trimming, or working on power lines.Scissor lifts come in different sizes that can commonly reach from 19 to 50 feet off the ground. Compact scissor lift models are lighter but can hold less, while bigger models have less maneuverability but a higher weight capacity.

Types of Scissor Lifts

Hydraulic Scissor Lifts
Hydraulic scissor lifts are powered by hand-operated or engine-driven hydraulic systems. The changing pressure of the hydraulic oil in the machine helps to operate the lift and move the platform up and down. Since a hydraulic scissor lift is relatively easy to operate, users aren't required to undergo much training, making it a simple option when you have lifting needs.
Since oil becomes more viscous in lower temperatures, hydraulic scissor lifts are much slower to operate in colder weather. Although this issue has been addressed in newer models, hydraulic scissor lifts are generally best suited for projects where speed and horsepower are not priorities.

Diesel Scissor Lifts
Diesel scissor lifts are among the most commonly used lifts on construction sites. Their signature cross-braced system allows them to reach a height of 30 feet, with advanced models extending as high as 60 feet. Since diesel fuel powers these lifts, they are noisy and emit fumes into the environment. Therefore, they are reserved for outdoor construction sites or areas where ventilation is present and noise can dissipate. Their hefty design also provides them with a larger aerial platform.

Pneumatic Scissor Lifts
Pneumatic scissor lifts use air pressure as their lifting mechanism. Compared to traditional lifts, this lift does not emit hazardous fumes or by-products into the environment, making it a more sustainable option for companies looking to minimize their carbon footprint. A pneumatic scissor lift vacuums and compresses atmospheric air to raise and lower the platform. Since they have no fuel, they do not provide as much power as a rough terrain or diesel lift, however, the machinery can be used in almost any environment, including indoor facilities.

Electric Scissor Lifts
Electric scissor lifts are another popular aerial platform machine. An alternative to burning fuel, electric scissor lifts feature a silent, powered drive mechanism. Since they do not emit fumes or noise, electric scissor lifts provide a cleaner solution for indoor spaces, which often have insufficient ventilation. These machines are also less bulky than their diesel counterparts, making them optimal for smaller spaces.

Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts
Rough terrain scissor lifts are also designed exclusively for outdoor terrain. They come equipped with a high-weight capacity, heavy-duty tires and additional safety mechanisms like fall restraints and arrestors. This makes them ideal for work sites with uneven surfaces and slopes and projects occurring in inclement weather. Rough terrain scissor lifts can provide elevation of up to 50 feet and widths of up to 10 feet. The machines are powered by diesel, gas, liquid propane or dual fuel.

Scissor Lifts Parts Components

Platform
The platform on the top of a scissor lift mechanism can be of various sizes, shapes, and materials. Also known as a lift table, the platform is the working surface that bears the load of personnel or work objects that the scissor lift raises or lowers. Units that transport workers typically feature a platform with guard rails around its perimeter for fall protection. Platforms without rails are typically designed for lifting or lowering materials and inanimate objects.

Scissor Legs
The scissor legs are the crisscross array or pantograph configuration of fabricated metal struts that bridge the gap between the base and the platform. The maximum working height of the scissor lift mechanism will be dictated by the length of each scissor leg or the number of scissor legs. The scissor legs raise the platform as they constrict (draw closer together) and lower the platform as they expand and can be driven by different power sources depending upon the specified application.

Down Valve
The down valve controls the flow of compressed air or hydraulic fluid back to its reservoir. The speed of this flow dictates the speed at which the platform will descend. The power source is connected to the down valve that controls the rate of descent.

Flow Control Valve
The flow control valve regulates the scissor lift rate of accent or decent by controlling how quickly the fluid or compressed air leaves or returns to the reservoir cylinder.

Cylinders
A scissor lift mechanism will typically have an array of one to four compression / expansion cylinders attached. These cylinders may be filled with hydraulic fluid (hydraulic scissor lift) or compressed air (pneumatic pump system) depending on the specification and the operating environment. An increase or reduction of pressure through these cylinders attached to the scissor legs actuates the raising or lowering action of the scissor legs and platform.

Base
This foundational part of the scissor lift mechanism is a sturdy footing made up of strong, rigid brackets. The base is engineered with tracks to guide the rollers at the bottom of the scissor legs. In conjunction with strong support from the base, these rollers ensure steady and stable raising and lowering of the unit. The size and configuration of the scissor lift base will depend on the model and its application.

Power Source
There is a range of power sources that can be specified to power a scissor lift. These can range from self-contained motors that run on different fuel sources to remote power packs. The selection of the most suitable power source will be dependent on the operating environment of the scissor lift.

Operating the Scissor Lifts: Key Steps and Controls

Before ever operating, it's best to familiarize yourself with the control panel layout. This can be done through basic scissor lift training with your site leader or our how-to-operate video. Common components include a joystick or toggle controls for movement and a series of buttons for various functions. Refer to the operator's manual for your specific scissor lift model to identify the location and purpose of each control.

Once you understand the control panel, turn on the power. This is done using the designated switch or key. Before operating, ensure that all emergency stop buttons are disengaged. If applicable, ensure the parking brake is disengaged before initiating any movement. To raise the platform, gently pull the joystick or control lever toward you when the lift is in raising mode. Exercise caution and ensure the area above is clear before elevating. Lower the platform by pushing the joystick or control lever forward, maintaining a controlled descent.

Scissor lifts typically feature simple steering controls. To move forward or backward, use the corresponding direction on the joystick or controls once the turtle feature has been activated. This turtle feature just ensures that you're not moving at full speed which is especially important when at max height. For turns, use the left and right steering controls. Be mindful of the scissor lift's turning radius and adjust your approach accordingly. Watch our video on how to operate a scissor lift below. Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency stop buttons or switches on the control panel. In the event of an emergency or if unexpected issues arise, immediately disengage the controls and activate the emergency stop to halt all movements.

When finished with the machine, park the scissor lift in a designated area, turn off the power, and engage the parking brake. Conduct a brief post-operation inspection, ensuring that the scissor lift is in good condition. Report and document any issues or anomalies to the appropriate personnel.

How to Choose Scissor Lifts

Consider the Working Height

The working height, or maximum platform height, is a critical factor when selecting a scissor lift. It determines the reach of the lift and the elevation it can provide for your work. Ensure that the scissor lift you choose can reach the desired height for your project. Remember to account for any overhead obstacles or clearance issues that might affect the lift's operation.

Consider Mobility and Terrain

Consider the terrain and mobility requirements of your project. If you need to move the scissor lift around frequently or work on uneven surfaces, a rough terrain scissor lift with off-road capabilities is essential. For indoor projects with smooth floors, a compact electric scissor lift may be more convenient.

Safety Features

Safety should be a top priority when selecting a scissor lift. Look for lifts that come equipped with safety features such as guardrails, safety harness anchor points, and emergency shut-off switches. These features will help ensure the well-being of your operators while working at height.

Evaluate Weight Capacity

Different scissor lifts have varying weight capacities. Consider the weight of both the operator and any materials or equipment that will be on the platform simultaneously. Ensure that the lift you select can handle the combined weight safely and efficiently.

Assess Platform Size

The size of the platform is essential, as it affects the workspace and the ability to move around comfortably. Larger platforms provide more space for tools and materials, which can improve productivity. However, if you are working in tight or confined spaces, a compact scissor lift with a smaller platform might be more suitable.

Determine Power Source

Choose between electric and diesel-powered scissor lifts based on your project's location and environmental considerations. Electric lifts are suitable for indoor use, as they produce zero emissions and are quiet. On the other hand, diesel-powered lifts are better suited for outdoor and rough terrain applications due to their robust performance.

Precautions for Maintenance of Scissor Lifts

The hydraulic oil used should be kept clean and not mixed with water and other impurities. Generally, it should be replaced every six months. During maintenance or failure, the power supply should be cut off in time. Lubrication and hydraulic oil of each part are carried out according to the requirements of the manufacturer.

Check the connection of each part, and tighten it if it is loose. The tightness of the connecting bolts of the body should be checked when the body is under pressure, and all connecting pins must have cotter pins and must be fully opened. Check whether each mechanism is operating normally and whether there is noise. If a fault is found, it must be eliminated in time. Check all wires and cables for damage. The damaged part should be bandaged and replaced in time. Each moving part of the hydraulic lift is filled with some lubricating oil to prolong the service life of the bearing. Check all hydraulic oil pipes and joints of the lift. The oil pipe must not be damaged, the joints must not be loose, and all joints must be tightened. Check whether there is oil in the piston rod of the oil cylinder and the transparent plastic vent pipe. If there is too much fluid, the cylinder seals may fail or the tank may be overfilled.

When replacing the sealing ring, the opened part of the hydraulic system of the scissor lift should be strictly cleaned first, and impurities and dirty oil should not be mixed into the system. It is never allowed to put the sealing ring directly over the threaded part of the component. In addition to the rancid hydraulic oil, there are more hydraulic oil and lubricating oil that can still be used. Only hydraulic oil mixed with metal particles can be used after sedimentation and filtration.
